When Details Matter, step up to the
Kodak Flexcel NX plate from Green Bay Engraving!
The Kodak Flexcel NX digital photopolymer continues to be a game changer for the flexographic printing industry! NX technology is helping flexographers everywhere go toe to toe with offset and gravure printers, printing with greater detail, increased color gamut, and more tonal range.
At Green Bay Engraving we have taken the NX plate and added our own production and proofing workflow to create FlexoWorks 2.0. As the beta site for the NX technology, we have been working with this exciting digital plate for longer than anyone. Our experience has allowed us to incorporate the NX plate into our FlexoWorks 2.0 workflow, combining elements of traditional high-end flexo prepress with some of the streamlined aspects of an offset workflow. The unique capabilities of the NX plate allows us to eliminate most of the typical flexo prepress “rules”, and work with a full tonal range and maximum detail.

The NX digital plate technology is a radical departure from the traditional LAMS digital flexo plate. The NX process employs a dye-based digital imaging layer and a lower power laser for imaging. Both of these elements allow for finer resolution and smaller spot size. Simply put, the NX plate can hold a smaller highlight dot, along with more “in-between” dots, which makes for an increased tonal range and more detail. The NX plate is exposed with a thin carrier sheet covering the plate surface, which acts as an oxygen barrier. The absence of oxygen eliminates “dot-sharpening” and provides a true flat-topped minimum highlight dot with stable sidewalls. This highlight dot is at the same height as the rest of the plate, unlike the highlight dot produced in a traditional digital plate process. This uniformity of plate height allows the NX plate to run longer and with more consistency than a traditional digital plate.
The latest enhancement of the NX plate is called DigiCap NX. DigiCap NX puts a microtexture screen pattern in the print surface of the plate, providing more ink control and transfer. This better ink transfer creates higher ink densities, leading to better solids, a wider achievable color gamut, better results with combination plates, and a reduction in the need for spot colors. DigiCap produces its best results on film, but can benefit all flexo printed substrates.
